The inquiry was jointly launched by the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain to encourage closer integrated working between the two professions, locally and nationally.

The inquiry is examining:

It has taken written evidence from a wide and diverse range of stakeholders from both professions, individuals, representative bodies and employers.

A final report is expected to be published in October 2010 to inform and shape the public debate around how future primary healthcare services can be delivered more effectively.

A series of questions were compiled to help give shape to submissions. The responses to these questions guided further exploration of the issues raised, with dialogue taking place between the two professional bodies on all of these issues. Outcomes from these discussions will form part of the final report:

  1. What are your views on how professionals can work together and how would it:
    1. Raise the quality of care?
    2. Be cost-effective?
  2. How does the current commissioning process create barriers to closer working?
  3. Are there any solutions?
  4. Should contractual arrangements be used to facilitate better working at a primary care level?
  5. Do you have examples of where GPs and pharmacists are working in close collaboration?
  6. What are the benefits for patients of this close collaboration?
  7. How could improved working between the professions facilitate the acceleration of the migration of services from secondary to primary care?
