Pharmacy debate packs

Friday 19 March
Do you want to take part in The Great Pharmacy Debate 2010?
Our national debating competition for KS4 science students takes place on Friday 19th March 2010 as part of the Festival of Social Science and National Science and Enginering Week.  Teams of 3 will take part in 4 rounds of debates, inspired by historical and contemporary pharmacy topics. Click here if you are a teacher and would like to find more about bringing a team, or if you would like to come along on the day to watch the final.

Our award-winning Pharmacy debate packs have been specifically written to support the National Curriculum for Key Stage 4 in Citizenship. Each pack contains information on how you could run a topical debate and includes one of the following three different motions to be researched and discussed by your students:

You may decide that you would like to download just one pack as part of a related scheme of work, or you may decide that you would like to use all three to develop your students' skills in speaking and listening as well as critical thinking. The packs are designed for use with Year 10 students, but can be adapted to suit the learning needs of your class.

Below you will find comprehensive teachers’ guidelines, including curriculum links, suggested session structure and information on different ways to debate. There are also some useful website resources listed to help your students in their research.

If as part of your debate you would like to arrange for a pharmacist to visit your class for your students to have the opportunity to ask questions relating to their research, we would be happy to help you arrange this. Our details are at the back of the teachers' guidelines.

We welcome your feedback

Below are teacher and student feedback forms which we hope you will take the time to complete and return to us by e-mail or by post. Information about how you have used the packs what has worked and what has not, and suggestions for new debate topics would help us to improve and increase the resources we can offer.

We hope that you and your students enjoy using the Pharmacy debate packs, and that you find they encourage active and positive discussions on these topical issues which affect all young people today.
