Behind the Scenes is a FREE session designed for people from the local community to get up close to (and in some cases handle) the Museum’s collection. Our 2008 pilot programme was so successful that we have planned some more for 2009!

Henry VIII Medicine Man

On 21 April 1509 Henry VIII became King of England. He is one of the most famous English monarchs and this year, 500 years on, museums galleries and heritage sites are marking the occasion with events connected to this fascinating character.

Often a taboo subject, this session unpacks the story of women’s medicines in the past. Some you might find quite surprising!

The Great Pharmacy Debate, Friday 13 March, 9.30am - 4.30pm
This national debating competition, hosted by the Museum, is taking place at RPSGB headquarters in association with the English Speaking Union. Secondary school students from all over the country have been selected to debate topical and often controversial pharmacy subjects as part of a one day event for National Science & Engineering Week (NSEW). Behind the Scenes: Promoting and packaging, Wednesday 8 April, 2-3pm
Come along and see some of the outrageous claims made for Victorian and early 20th century remedies. Looking at both medicine packaging and advertising, this session will have you laughing and cringing!

Behind the scenes: Healing herbs, Wednesday 13 May, 2-3pm
Herbs have been the basis of medicine in this country for centuries with techniques for using them changing little since Anglo-Saxon times. See examples from our collection and try your hand at being a herbalist yourself!

Lambeth pharmacy walk Saturday 6th June 11am
Guided walk uncovering the hidden history of north Lambeth. With a focus on health and its direct relationship with the poverty which once infected the area, we will find out about some of the people who once lived and worked in the neighbourhood, including some rather well known characters. Voluntary contribution of £3 per person.

Behind the Scenes: Gorgeous glassware, Wednesday 10 June, 2-3pm
From the carboy placed inside the chemist shop window as a symbol of pharmacy to the beautifully coloured bottles and jars which filled the shelves inside. Find out about both the functional and ornamental glassware we have in our collection.
